FoodFun Lifeskills Instructional Software (FoodFun LIS) is a start-up organization whose vision is to create the finest education/entertainment software for non-reading individuals with developmental disabilities. To meet the specific needs of this customer segment, the software product was designed and developed by a Ph.D. veteran in special education. The software will help students learn life skills, and it will also be enjoyable to use. FoodFun LIS is an Illinois L.L.C. Sue Altamirankow (Ph.D.) is the founder and owner of FoodFun LIS. She will be based out of Chicago.

The Market

FoodFun has identified four distinct market segments that will be interested in the software product. These segments are the most likely consumers of the software. These segments are:

  • Centers for Independent Living‘#8211 These centers help individuals with developmental disabilities to live independently. The four main life skills that individuals need to live independently are the core of the curriculum.
  • School Districts All states must provide education for students with special learning needs until the age 21. The school districts are often the educational providers until the students are 18 and will be interested in FoodFun’s software as they help the students obtain fundamental lifeskills.
  • Proactive Parent Parents who want to be involved in their children&#8217’s education will search for tools that can be used at home to aid their child’s learning.
  • Agencies– Many states have formed agencies that act as brokers to connect service providers with individuals. The establishment of agencies is usually a result a settlement or payment in a lawsuit (including a case class action).

Parents are expected to purchase only one copy of the program, while the other segments will generally purchase multiple copies/site licenses and are likely to purchase upgrades to subsequent versions.

The Product

Grocery shopping and socialization/leisure are two of the main lifeskills which individuals with developmental disabilities are taught. FoodFun has created a unique software product that helps to teach these valuable skills. The software starts with grocery shopping. This can be described as a digital recipe book. Each recipe can be represented by a picture. The picture is selected by the student. A list of pictures shows the ingredients and the utensils that are needed to make it. The student can then print the pictures and take them with him to the grocery to make their own purchases.

The second component is the socialization/leisure time module that provides the user with a choice of many different social events/parties for which they can prepare food. This module allows students to plan for a party (and we know EVERYONE loves to plan for parties) and incorporates music linked to each type of social event to provide entertainment for the user. Many/most individuals with developmental disabilities will receive shear joy when they click on a social even and hear the music.

Competitive Edge

There are many companies in the market that offer educational products. FoodFun LIS will leverage their competitive edge by incorporating entertainment into their software product, a means of creating interest and joy while using the software. The students will enjoy the program more and spend more time using it. FoodFun believes that students are more likely to enjoy the product than being forced to use it.

Management

FoodFun is Dr. Sue Altamirankow’s creation. Sue is a graduate of the University of Michigan with a Masters and Ph.D. degree in special education. She has taught in university settings for eight years. Her thesis, “Implications of Lifeskill Training for Individuals With Autism”, was published in a groundbreaking paper. It carefully examined all aspects of lifeskills. This was the foundation of her vision to start a business in software development. She knew she could create a study aid that was both effective and fun. It would be fun for the students because they would enjoy it. It would also teach important life skills.

Individuals with developmental disabilities can live independently and are supported by FoodFun. FoodFun has forecasted revenues of $400,397 and $490,000 for years two and three.
